Flood Impacts and Historical Events
Stage Impacts
10.0THE CURRENT EXTENT OF FLOODING ALONG THE SAN JUAN RIVER IN NEW MEXICO HAS NOT BEEN OBSERVED SINCE BEFORE THE COMPLETION OF NAVAJO DAM IN 1962. IN THE FARMINGTON VICINITY...BACKWATER FLOODING ON THE ANIMAS RIVER AT AND ABOVE THE CONFLUENCE WITH THE SAN JUAN RIVER IS THE MAJOR CONCERN. SEE FLOOD BULLETINS PERTAINING TO THE ANIMAS RIVER. DOWNRIVER THROUGH SHIPROCK...MOSTLY LOW LYING AND AGRICULTURAL AREAS ARE SUBJECT TO INUNDATION.
8.5OVERBANK FLOW IS OCCURRING FROM JUST BELOW THE CONFLUENCE OF THE ANIMAS AND SAN JUAN RIVERS AT FARMINGTON...AND CONTINUING DOWNRIVER THROUGH SHIPROCK. AT THIS WATER LEVEL...THE FAST FLOW CAN RESULT IN RIVER BANK EROSION BUT OTHERWISE MINOR FLOOD DAMAGE.
