22.0River levels approaching a 500 year flood. Level is more than 3 feet above June 2008. Great destruction along SR 46 between I-65 and Columbus and along SR 11 corridor south of Columbus to Seymour. Flood waters threaten wellhouse and automated readings. Columbus cutoff from the outside world.
18.6A record river flood occurred rapidly during June 2008 following rains of up to 11 inches in the Edinburgh area. Prior to the devastating flood, the ground was very wet and the river already flooding with a beginning river level of 10 feet. All communications with the Columbus area were lost early during this flood as Columbus was quickly isolated from the outside world. The severe river flooding occurred during darkness. The majority of the flood damage to the city occurred from Haw Creek.
18.6During June 2008...Haw Creek flooded the first floor of the Columbus Hospital as well as numerous homes and businesses in the City of Columbus. Along State Road 46 west of Columbus all businesses that were not raised above the 100 year flood elevations were heavily flooded. SR 46 interchange with I-65 was flooded by 4 to 5 feet of water from a combination of river and storm drain backup. Flood waters extended 2 blocks west of the exit. First floor rooms at the Holiday Inn Express flooded.
18.6The June 2008 flood quickly decended on the East Fork White River in the Columbus area. SR 46 was flooded from Columbus westward to 2 block west of the I-65 interchange. Flood waters were 4 to 5 feet deep at the bottom of the Interchange. The McDonalds had 4 feet of water on the inside. McDonalds was one of several businesses along SR 46 that was heavily damaged. This flood surpassed the March 1913 flood by almost 3/4 of a foot and is the greatest known flood to hit this portion of the river.
18.6Following the June 2008 flood...McDonalds and other new businesses along I-65 exit 68 are located well above the 100 year flood. Serious flooding would still occur in the Columbus area at this level and higher.
18.0Aerial photo of Interstate 65 Exit 68 shows SR 46 flooded on both sides of I-65. Entrances to local businesses blocked by flood waters. A farm homestead located about 2/3 of a mile north of SR 46 just west of CR 325 W is an island. CR 325 W...CR 200 N...Georgetown and Tellman Roads submerged by several feet of water. Flood waters over east bound SR 46 bridge and SR 11 north and south of Columbus submerged by several feet of water. Serious flooding continues in Columbus and Garden City areas.
17.0Approaching a record flood. Indiana 46 closed. Evacuations are likely on homes north of Indiana 46. Business along Indiana 46 affected by flood waters. Approximate height of 100 year flood. This level was quickly passed in June 2008.
16.0Water flows over Indiana 46 west of Columbus. Water surrounds houses north of Indiana 46. Some evacuations are necessary. Businesses and houses beginning to flood along Indiana 46.
15.0The river floods 2 of State Road 46s 4 lanes just west of Columbus.
14.0Extensive agricultural flooding extends from Columbus area downstream to Walesboro. Flooding of Indiana 11 from Columbus to Walesboro is in progress. Businesses and residences flood along Indiana 11.
12.2After the Great Flood of June 2008...SR 46 west bound from Columbus to I-65 remained closed...while SR 46 east bound from I-65 to Columbus was open. SR 11 north and south bound remained closed.
12.0Extensive agricultural flooding is in progress north of Highway 46 and along right bank downstream of guage.
11.3Following the Great Flood of June 2008...Jonathon Moore Pike/SR 46 west bound from Colubus to I-65 was reopened.
11.2State Road 11 in the Garden City area closed at this level during March 2008 flood. Every road leading to or crossing the East Fork White River in Bartholomew County except for State Road 46 was flooded during the bigger March 2008 flood.
10.9After the great flood of June 2008...SR 11 from Garden City to Little Acres remained closed.
10.1The lowest portions of the parking lot for the Holiday Inn Express near I-65 was extensively flooded in March 2008. Also flooded were the nearby walking trails and the basketball goal.
10.0Every Bartholomew county road that approaches or crosses the East Fork White River including Southern Crossing is affected by flood waters. County Road 800 south is extensively flooded in southern Bartholomew County. Mill Race Park in Columbus is extensively flooded. The local water fowl swimming in the park wait for vistors to feed them. Flood waters were on State Road 11 in the southbound lane about 1 mile north of County Road 800 South in March 2008.
9.0Cabins begin to flood south of Tellman Road. Mill Race Park floods. Lowland flooding begins. Indiana 11 between Southern Crossing and CR 550 S closed in August 2009. River reading at Seymour was 17.5 feet and rising.
8.0The river is at an unusually high level. Local parks begin to flood.
6.0After the great flood of June 2008...the river had fallen to 6 feet and rose to 7.75 feet. On Friday the 13th CR 250W just south of Lowell Road was reported close. The river was below 5 feet and falling when the road closing was reported on line by the Republic.
